Connecting Claude

Claude connects to EMCE through a custom connector (Anthropic’s name for a remote MCP server). Connectors are set up once in your Claude account and are then available in Claude Desktop, claude.ai, and the Claude mobile apps.

Requirements

• A Claude Free, Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plan. Free plans allow one custom connector. On Team and Enterprise plans, only an Owner can add the connector; members then enable it for themselves.
• A Director or Administrator profile in an EMCE organization that has enabled MCP connections.

Add the EMCE connector

Pro and Max plans

1. Open Claude Desktop (or claude.ai) and go to Settings → Connectors. In Claude Desktop the settings are under the Claude menu on macOS or the ⋯ menu on Windows.

2. Scroll to the bottom and click Add custom connector.

3. Enter a name — EMCE — and the URL for your region:

   Leave Advanced settings (OAuth Client ID / Secret) empty. EMCE registers Claude automatically.

4. Click Add. The connector appears in the list with a Connect button.

5. Click Connect. A browser window opens on EMCE’s sign-in page — continue with Signing in and choosing a profile.

Team and Enterprise plans

An Owner adds the connector for the organization:

1. Go to Organization settings → Connectors.
2. Click Add, hover over Custom, then select Web.
3. Enter a name — EMCE — and the URL for your region (https://mcp.emce.app/mcp or https://mcp.ca.emce.app/mcp). Leave the OAuth Client ID / Secret empty.
4. Click Add.

Then each person who wants to use it:

1. Opens Settings → Connectors, finds EMCE, and clicks Connect.
2. Signs in to EMCE and chooses a profile — see Signing in and choosing a profile.

Use it in a conversation

1. Start a new chat. Click the Search and tools button (the sliders icon next to the attach button) and make sure EMCE is turned on.
2. Ask a question. Claude decides which EMCE tools to call; you’ll see each call as an expandable step in the reply.

Try one of these to confirm the connection:

Who am I connected as in EMCE, and which organization?

List the active cohorts in my program and how many students are in each.

Which students in [cohort name] haven’t met their skill requirements yet?

Good to know

• Claude connects from Anthropic’s servers, not from your computer. This is true even in Claude Desktop. It just means EMCE sees the connection coming from Anthropic’s infrastructure, which the EMCE MCP server is designed for.
• Claude Projects and Research can use the EMCE connector too. In Research, Claude may call EMCE tools without asking first, so review what it’s reporting as you would any summary.
• One organization per connection. If you administer several organizations, add the connector a second time (for example, as “EMCE — North Campus”) and choose a different profile when you sign in.

Disconnecting

In Settings → Connectors, open the ⋯ menu on the EMCE connector and choose Disconnect (keeps the connector, ends your sign-in) or Remove.

Troubleshooting

Symptom	Try this
”Couldn’t connect to this server” when adding	Check the URL is exactly https://mcp.emce.app/mcp (or the Canada one) — including /mcp at the end — and that you’re not on a network that blocks *.emce.app.
Sign-in page opens, but the buttons do nothing	Reload the page. If it persists, the page reports “did not load correctly”; contact EMCE Support with the time and your browser.
Sign-in succeeds but the consent screen says no profile is eligible	See Troubleshooting on the overview page — usually the organization hasn’t enabled MCP connections, or your role isn’t Director / Administrator.
Claude connected before, now says it’s not authorized	Your organization turned MCP off, or your profile changed. Click Connect again once it’s resolved.
Claude answers from memory instead of calling EMCE	Make sure EMCE is toggled on under Search and tools for that chat, and ask more specifically (“use EMCE to look up…”).
