Connecting ChatGPT

To add EMCE’s remote MCP server as a custom app, its creator must use developer mode. Once a Business, Enterprise, or Education workspace admin publishes that app, other authorized workspace members can connect to and use the published app without enabling developer mode themselves. Apps configured on the web are then available in the ChatGPT desktop app, chatgpt.com, and the mobile apps.

Requirements

• A ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Education account. Developer mode isn’t available on the Free plan. Plus and Pro users can add EMCE directly; EMCE is read-only, which fits Pro’s documented read/fetch support.
• On Business, Enterprise, and Education workspaces, an admin or owner must enable developer mode for the app creator and publish EMCE to the workspace. Other authorized members don’t need developer mode merely to use the published app.
• A Director or Administrator profile in an EMCE organization that has enabled MCP connections.

Turn on developer mode

Only the person creating the EMCE app performs this step. Developer mode is enabled on the web.

1. Go to chatgpt.com and open Settings (your profile picture, bottom left).
2. Open Security and login and turn on Developer mode. On Business, Enterprise, or Education accounts, use Settings → Apps → Advanced settings instead; the workspace admin must first grant access under Workspace Settings → Permissions & Roles → Connected Data.
3. Read the warning. Developer mode lets ChatGPT use any MCP server you add; the EMCE server is read-only, so it can’t change your EMCE data.

Add the EMCE app

Plus and Pro

1. Go to chatgpt.com/plugins (also reachable from Settings → Apps), and click the + (create) button.
2. Fill in:

   • Name: EMCE

   • Description: anything, e.g. My EMS program’s data

   • MCP Server URL:

     Region	URL

     Canada	https://mcp.ca.emce.app/mcp

   • Authentication: OAuth. Leave the Client ID and Client Secret empty — EMCE registers ChatGPT automatically.

3. Tick the acknowledgement that you trust this application and click Create.
4. A browser window opens on EMCE’s sign-in page — continue with Signing in and choosing a profile.

Business, Enterprise, Education

A workspace admin or owner (or a user they’ve authorized as a developer) creates the app:

1. Go to Settings → Apps (or chatgpt.com/plugins) and click +.
2. Enter the name EMCE, the MCP Server URL for your region (https://mcp.emce.app/mcp or https://mcp.ca.emce.app/mcp), and choose OAuth authentication with no Client ID / Secret.
3. Create it, then publish it to the workspace if you want everyone to see it (Enterprise / Education admins can also switch individual tools on or off after publishing).

Then each person who wants to use it opens the app from Apps and clicks Connect, signs in to EMCE and chooses a profile — see Signing in and choosing a profile.

Use it in a conversation

1. Start a new chat. Click + in the message box, choose More, then Developer mode, and select EMCE.
2. Ask a question. ChatGPT shows each tool call in the reply; expand a call to see exactly what it asked EMCE and what came back.

Because every EMCE tool is read-only, ChatGPT won’t stop to ask for confirmation before calling them. (It does ask before write actions on other servers.)

Who am I connected as in EMCE, and which organization?

List the active cohorts in my program and how many students are in each.

Which students in [cohort name] haven’t met their skill requirements yet?

Good to know

• ChatGPT connects from OpenAI’s servers, not from your computer. This is true even in the ChatGPT desktop app.
• One organization per connection. If you administer several organizations, create a second app (for example, “EMCE — North Campus”) and choose a different profile when you sign in.
• Deep research can use EMCE as a source when the app is selected for the task.

Disconnecting

Open Settings → Apps, choose EMCE, and click Disconnect (ends your sign-in) or Delete (removes the app).

Troubleshooting

Symptom	Try this
The + button doesn’t offer to create an app	Developer mode isn’t on for your account — see Turn on developer mode. On a workspace plan, an admin may need to allow it.
”Error creating connector” / “Unable to fetch”	Check the URL is exactly https://mcp.emce.app/mcp (or the Canada one), including /mcp.
Sign-in page opens, but the buttons do nothing	Reload the page. If it persists, the page reports “did not load correctly”; contact EMCE Support with the time and your browser.
Consent screen says no profile is eligible	See Troubleshooting on the overview page — usually the organization hasn’t enabled MCP connections, or your role isn’t Director / Administrator.
ChatGPT worked before, now says the app isn’t authorized	Your organization turned MCP off, or your profile changed. Connect again once it’s resolved.
ChatGPT ignores EMCE and answers generally	Select EMCE under Developer mode for that chat, and name it in the request (“using EMCE, list…”).
